Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who is ProNine?
A. The Hardy family has been manufacturing baseballs, softballs and related sports equipment for almost 30 years. In 2001 they started ProNine on the belief that professional quality equipment can be sold to teams at lower prices. Their efficient low-overhead operation means you will always enjoy ProNine products priced well below the competition. They concentrate on core baseball products and first-rate quality balls and equipment, therefore we believe they produce the best baseballs and softballs available.
Q. What is a cushioned cork center baseball?
A. The ball consist of a small cork sphere held together by a glue binder, then wrapped in a layer of black rubber and a second layer red rubber. This type of center is the most expensive, most durable, and produces the best sound off a bat. Cushioned cork centers are preferred for college, high school and youth league tournament play.
Q. What is a cork and rubber center baseball?
A. The ball consists of an enlarged cork sphere held together by a glue binder that is rubberized. ProNine’s cork/rubber center balls test out as the most durable on the market. This results in its superior durability and the sound off the bat is similar to cushioned cork centers up the age group of about 15-yr olds. High School and college players with greater bat speeds will hear a noticeable sound difference between this center and the cushioned cork center.
Q. What is a solid center baseball?
A. The ball consists of a one-piece sphere held together by a glue binder that is rubberized. This solid cork and rubber center makes up the entire inside of the ball. The sound off the bat is duller than the cork and rubber center, but it is still a very durable core designed to be played by youth league ages 7-12 years old.
Q. What is a virgin wool winding?
A. Pure white sheep’s wool that has never been used before. White virgin wool has the best rebound and durability properties, but is by far the most expensive type of wool.
Q. What is high-end reprocessed wool winding?
A. High-grade wool clothing imported from England, Scotland, and Ireland is shredded and then spun into long strands for baseball windings. This type of wool is reprocessed only one-time from clothing to baseball winding and has outstanding rebound and durability properties at a more reasonable cost.
Q. What kind of leather is used on baseballs?
A. Full grain alum tanned cowhide is used on all baseballs. Two distinct grades of cowhide is used. The very best grade, known as “heart of the hide”, comes from the shoulders, back, and rear end of the cow and is used on all of the cushioned cork center baseballs. The second grade of less expensive leather comes from the sides and belly of the cow and is used on the cork and rubber center models and the solid center models of baseballs.
